FREELANCING.... A CHOICE TO FREEDOM

Updated: Mar 19, 2019

Nothing changes if nothing changes.

At whatever age, it is always difficult to make that first step out of one’s comfort zone. However, when reality is shaken and you are faced with major life-changing situations, a decision has to be made.

In my case, I had to leave the corporate world and give up a management position. We had to start dipping into our modest savings. I was sure that it was more important for me to be home for my family. I have to be there for my husband who is recovering from a stroke. I have to be there for my son who was only a year-old then. I needed to take on all domestic responsibilities and had to make sure that the needs of my then 93-year old mother-in-law are likewise taken-cared of. I had and still have a lot on my plate. Fortunately, my three older girls stepped up as well and are of some help. Even that, I have to balance as I didn’t want them to feel burdened by the situation.

Do something you love and be good at it.

It has come to a point that I had to work on replenishing our depleting funds. I tried a number of different ventures. These might have helped in one way or the other but I felt that I have yet to find “the one” --- something that entails doing what I am good at and what I love to do. And then I found Filipino Virtual Assistance. Immediately, I thought...this could be it! True enough, as soon as I started attending the online coaching sessions and studied the lessons, I at once embraced that I am a freelancer, a virtual assistant.

Admittedly, I am not a “techie”. I was not as hooked to the digital and social media platforms as established freelancers already were. It took a long time for friends to convince me to go into facebook. I finally created an account to access something for one of my daughter’s school requirements. For the longest time, that’s the only one I maintained. I seldom post, I just quickly browse through friends’ updates. With freelancing, I needed an almost 100% mindset shift. I had to quickly learn that these are tools of the trade. I had to face a weakness and turn it into something that could highlight my strengths.

Freelancing is not just a service. It is a solution.

Aside from being able to put my writing skills to fore, what excites me most is the value that freelancing and/or virtual assistance can bring to business owners. Analytics feed my brain and propels me to come up with recommendations for possible solutions to business requirements. The changing times call for changing business strategies.

Aside from the number of jobs that companies may outsource to virtual assistants, institutions may also consider tapping the services of social media managers and SEO specialists to boost their businesses.
